RULES & REGULATIONS

The active playing rules for The LUG will be based off of the Hockey Canada & Hockey USA Rule/Casebook combination, with few exceptions. Should your team require further clarification on any rule or regulation, send the league an email in the contact section of the website and we will respond back to you as soon as possible.

The notes below indicate the rules and regulations that cater specifically to our gameplay.

GAME SET UP

Period LengthWarm Up: 3 minutes (clock starts immediately)
1st Period: 12 minute RUN TIME period
2nd Period: 12 minute RUN TIME period
3rd Period: 15 minute RUN TIME period
Shootout: 3 players per team. Both teams shoot simultaneously. If tied after 3 shooters, it becomes sudden death, shot for shot shootout.

* 45 seconds between periods
* Last 30 seconds of each period is stop time
* Last 3 minutes of the game is stop if if the game is separated by 2 goals or less.
* Referees & Time Keepers have discretion to move to a single shooter, elimination shootout based on the amount of time remaining on the rental clock. 
Game LengthAll games work under a 50 minute ice slot, and as such, games will run by the 50 minute framework for overtime and stop time purposes. if a game is going over, then it can be ended early.
Switching SidesAfter each period, it is up to the discretion of the captains on whether or not the teams should switch sides.  
Two Line PassesPassing from behind the centre ice line is permitted, and will not result in a whistle blown.
IcingIcing will only be called if the puck is shot from behind the defensive teams own blue line to behind the opposing teams goal line. 
Home & Away BenchesUse your assigned bench at all times as outlined in your teams home or away designation
PenaltiesMinor = 3 minutes running time
Double Minor = 6 minutes running time
Major = 8 minutes running time

Face-offs following any penalty will take place in the offending teams defensive zone (NHL rules).

Three minor Penalties will result an ejection from the game.

Referee’s have full discretion over in game activity pertaining to penalties and ejections. Even if not explicitly written here, the referee may make in game decisions dependant on the situation. Suspensions will be given at the discretion of league management and referees.

Ringers / Extra Players
REGULAR SEASON

LUG Permits the use of extra players during the regular season if and only if the considered team has 7 or less players. Teams are able to bring players to add to their roster only to get to the minimum of 7 players (6 plus a goalie) in order for a game to take place.

All extras should be of similar skill level to the league they are playing.

EXCEPTIONS: Substitute goalies can be used in any game that requires one. Male goalies can also play in female games as substitutes when needed.
Ringers / Extra Players
PLAYOFFS

Ringers / Substitute Players are not permitted. If a team is deemed to have players that are not on the roster during playoffs, the game will be considered default for the accused team. Teams can request an ID check of a player to confirm that player is on their opponents registered LUG roster.

For playoffs, a team must have a minimum of 5 players (plus goalie) to play.

EXCEPTIONS: Substitute goalies can be used in any game that requires one. Male goalies can also play in female games as substitutes when needed.

Stats & Jersey Numbers

Teams are given LUG jerseys for the season. All players must update their player number on their HockeyShift profile in order to receive stats for their games. CLICK HERE TO UPDATE YOUR JERSEY NUMBER.

FIGHTING

Fighting is NOT permitted in LUG Hockey. 

1st InfractionMajor Penalty & ejection from game.
* Serious offences may result in subsequent suspensions or disciplinary actions.
2nd+ InfractionsThose involved in multiple fighting majors in a single season may be suspended and/or removed from the league. Each case will be evaluated on a case by case basis. 
Bench BrawlsAny team involved in a bench brawl or line brawl will receive an automatic 1 game suspension. The situation will also be reviewed for further suspensions to individuals and the team above this. Both teams will receive a default for the game in which the brawl took place.

EQUIPMENT

Players must wear skates, pants, jock strap, shin pads, hockey gloves, and helmet in order to participate in league games.

All helmets MUST be CSA approved.

Players must wear a helmet with a cage or visor. Goalies must wear a full goalie face mask.

Helmet chinstraps must be done up at all times a player is on the ice.

Any player who does not have a helmet with cage or visor is not permitted to take the ice. 

GOALIE MASK CONTACT

A whistle will be blown after any instance in which a puck is shot off the face mask of a goaltender.

NON PLAYING PENALTIES & SUSPENSIONS

Outside of gameplay, all players are expected to live up to a standard Code of Conduct. The LUG Code of Conduct include some basic rules for participating in the league and being present at games and LUG events. These common sense rules are extremely important and any violation or failure to follow these rules will result in player or team suspension and or expulsion from LUG sports. 

AlcoholAll alcohol is prohibited from being brought into facilities. This includes dressing rooms, the parking lot, benches, stands, and any other not mentioned facility premises.

Benches - Any alcohol seen on benches will result in an additional suspension due to the complete disregard for the rules.
Player with Alcohol = 1 game suspensions. 2nd infraction results in removal from league.

Team with Alcohol - 1 game team suspension. 2nd infraction results in removal from league.

Benches - 2 game team suspension. 2nd infraction results in removal from league.
Vaping & SmokingSmoking or vaping is prohibited inside facilitiesPlayer  = 1 game suspensions. 2nd infraction results in removal from league.
FightingFighting is prohibited in LUG. Please de-escalate situations as best as you can!1st infraction = 1 game suspension
2nd infraction = 2 game suspension
Any subsequent infraction will result in removal from LUG.

All fights are subject to review and potential additional disciplinary action.
Abusive BehaviourVerbal abuse to players, officials, or fans is prohibited. Please be courteous to those in the community and to each other.Report an incident of verbal abuse here.

Minimum suspension for any confirmed instance of verbal abuse is a 2 game suspension.

All reports of verbal abuse will be investigated to determine supplemental discipline.
Racism & HateProhibited in all formsReport an incident of racism or hate here. Any player determined to be involved in an act of racism or hate will be removed from the league.
Facility DamageProhibited in all formsAny team found to have damaged the facility in any way will receive an automatic 3 game suspension.

If there is damage to the facility that you are made aware of, please take photos and send to LUG. 
Fan BehaviourAll actions of the fans are attributed to the teams on the ice. Please ensure your guests behave and follow the above rules. Any incidents created by fans may result in a Fan Ban for your division. Teams found to have brought fans to the rink to party or drink will receive suspensions. 

DISCIPLINARY ACTION 

LUG Hockey reserves the right to impose disciplinary action against any player deemed to have broken the rules and regulations of the league including but not limited to suspension and expulsion with ZERO refund.

Arena Behaviour

All players/coaches/fans/LUG affiliates are expected to respect LUG HOCKEY Arena Rules.

  • Shooting pucks, balls or other objects in the arena common areas is prohibited.
  • Use of profanity, slander, racial comments or any kind of inappropriate language is not permitted.
  • Groups/Individuals are responsible for any damage caused to the facility.
  • Garbage must be placed in bins provided. This includes arena locker rooms.
  • Spitting/Chewing tobacco products is strictly prohibited in all areas of the arena.
  • Anyone under the influence of drugs or alcohol will be refused entry and or removed from the premises.
  • Possession and/or consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited and includes the locker rooms and arena benches.
  • Smoking/Vaping of any kind will not be prohibited in the arena or in the locker rooms.

GAME DEFAULTS

If a team voluntarily defaults a scheduled LUG Hockey game under the agreed schedule. The team will be given a warning and the game will count as a default loss for the team who defaulted. If both teams agree to not play this will be deemed a double default.

If a team voluntarily defaults a second time, the team could be subject to league ejection. The circumstance will be put under review by LUG Management and a final decision will be made.

Payment Policy

LUG Holds the right to take disciplinary action on teams that have not fulfilled the full balance of team fees 2 weeks after the first game is played.

LUG Teams are expected to pay the full amount designated to each league regardless of rostered players.

Referees

At absolutely no point will poor treatment of officials will be permitted under any circumstance.

The referees hold the right for final decision during gameplay for penalties.
