What is LUG College Hockey?
LUG College Hockey is our flagship hockey experience and the natural next step for players coming out of competitive or recreational minor hockey. It’s built for players who still care about the competition, structure, stats, playoffs, jerseys, and real-league feel.
It’s rec hockey on steroids. Keep the Dream Alive.
How do I join LUG?
There are four ways to play:
- Create a Team — Become the GM, recruit your roster, and build your own team.
- Join Your Captain’s Team — Register directly to an existing team.
- Join as a Free Agent — Sign up on your own and LUG will work to place you on a team.
- Join with Friends — Register as a small group and we’ll do our best to keep you together.
We have a strong track record of finding homes for Free Agents, but starting a team and recruiting your own group is the best way to experience LUG.
Do I need a full team to play?
No. While building your own team is the best way to play LUG, you can also join as an individual Free Agent or register with a small group of friends. We’ll do our best to place Free Agents on an appropriate team and keep friends together whenever possible.
What skill levels are offered?
LUG is built for a wide range of hockey backgrounds. Depending on the market, divisions may include:
Rookie — Newer players, ODR legends, and players looking to get reps and have fun.
Lower — Recreational players who still want to compete.
Mid — Competitive players looking for good-paced hockey.
Upper — Strong, athletic players looking for high-level games.
Women’s — Competitive and recreational women’s divisions.
Teams select their preferred level during registration, and LUG may adjust division structures based on registration and competitive balance.
What is LUG Women’s College Hockey?
LUG Women’s College Hockey brings the full LUG experience to women’s hockey — organized competition, team culture, stats, playoffs, special events, and championship opportunities built around the college calendar.
It’s designed for women who grew up playing hockey and want to keep competing, as well as players looking for a fun, social, organized way to stay in the game while at school. It's a great way to stay on the ice and make new friends.
What skill level do I need to play in the Women’s League?
You don’t need to be an elite player to play LUG Women’s Hockey. Our goal is to create competitive, balanced divisions that give players of different hockey backgrounds a great experience.
Depending on the market and number of teams, women’s leagues may include multiple skill levels or be realigned to create the best possible competitive balance.
Whether you played competitive minor hockey, recreational hockey, or are newer to the game, choose the level that best reflects your experience and we’ll help take it from there.
Where do we play?
Teams play locally in and around their college or university community. Most games are played within approximately 30 minutes of campus, with many leagues playing at campus rinks or premier facilities in their market.
Division champions may also qualify for LUG championship events, giving teams the opportunity to compete against winners from other LUG leagues.
When do we play?
College Hockey games are primarily played Sunday through Thursday. Sunday games can take place throughout the day and evening, while Monday–Thursday games are generally played in the evening.
Special events such as Winter Classics, Rivalry Nights, and Championship Tournaments may take place on Fridays or Saturdays.
Exact game nights and times vary by market and division.
How does the season schedule work?
Once registration closes, LUG works with our arena partners to finalize ice times and build each league schedule. We aim to create as much consistency as possible with game nights, times, and locations.
College schedules are built around the student calendar, with blackout dates for holidays, long weekends, reading weeks, final exams, and major events such as Halloween and the Super Bowl.
Schedules are released in batches throughout the season.
What’s included with LUG College Hockey?
LUG is more than a weekly ice time. Depending on the league and market, the LUG experience includes:
- A full regular season and competitive playoffs
- LUG jerseys and socks
- Player and team apparel
- Two certified officials
- League stats and leaderboards
- In-game music where available
- MVP awards
- All-Star Games and special events
- Winter Classics and Rivalry Nights
- Balanced divisions
- Championship opportunities
Most importantly, you join a community of hockey players who still love competing, being part of a team, and keeping the dream alive.
How does Division Realignment work?
Nobody likes sandbagging.
Our goal is to create divisions where every team has a chance to compete. LUG may adjust teams or division structures during the season when necessary to create the best possible competitive balance.
You should register for the division that best reflects your team’s ability — and we’ll take it from there.
How do I get involved, work for LUG, or bring LUG to my campus?
LUG hires students across our markets to help bring leagues, events, content, and the LUG community to life. Interested in working with us, starting a new division, or bringing LUG to your campus? Email hello@lugsports.com and our team will be in touch.
